Two commitments we hold to: organically certified ingredients from root to cup, and packaging we can account for without overclaiming. This is what both mean in practice.
The difference between organic and conventional tea farming.
Most tea in the world is grown conventionally — which means synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers applied across the growing season. For a cup that’s steeped directly in the water you drink, that matters more than for most agricultural products.
Organic certification requires that no synthetic agrochemicals are used on the land — typically for a minimum of three years before certification. The soil is managed through composting, crop rotation and biological pest control. For tea specifically, the absence of residual pesticides on whole-leaf botanicals is meaningful: pesticide residues in tea are a documented concern across regulatory bodies, including the UK FSA and the European EFSA.
There is also a flavour argument: organic whole-leaf botanicals, particularly aromatic herbs grown without chemical forcing, tend to develop more complex volatile compounds. The difference is subtle, and we wouldn’t stake everything on it — but the cup is different, and not only in theory.
Finally, organic farming is generally better for soil health and biodiversity over the long run — less soil degradation, fewer chemical inputs into local water systems. These effects are cumulative and slow, which is exactly why we think they matter.

Cultever holds certification from the Organic Food Federation — the UK’s independent organic certification body. Every ingredient in every blend is covered. Certification is renewed annually through physical inspection of our supply chain, not a one-time approval.
Compostable pyramid bags
Our pyramid tea bags are made from plant-based cornstarch and heat-sealed, so there are no glues. No nylon, no PET. They are compostable, but they need industrial composting conditions rather than a garden heap — your food waste caddy is the right home for them. The whole-leaf format requires a larger bag than a flat teabag, so we use a proper pyramid (up to 2.5g) that gives the botanicals room to open.
FSC-certified paper pouches
The outer pouch is made from FSC-certified paper — sourced from responsibly managed forests. The paper layer is kerbside-recyclable in most UK councils.
Honest caveat: the pouch has a thin polyethylene (PE) inlay for moisture protection. The PE layer is not kerbside-recyclable. We’re working on a fully compostable outer and won’t claim recyclability until the whole pouch qualifies.
Paper-based shipping
Orders ship in paper-based outer packaging. No bubble wrap, no polystyrene chips. Where void fill is needed, we use paper wadding.
No individual wrapping
Pyramid bags sit loose in the pouch — no individually wrapped envelopes, no foil sleeves per bag. Less material, simpler disposal.
What we use, what we’re still working on.
We take a plain position: packaging should be as minimal as possible, and we should only make claims we can fully stand behind. The UK CMA’s Green Claims Code is clear that vague environmental claims — “eco-friendly,” “sustainable,” “planet-positive” — are not acceptable without specific, verifiable evidence.
So here is what we can say precisely:
The pyramid bags are plant-based and compostable. The outer paper pouch is FSC-certified and the paper layer is recyclable. The PE moisture barrier is not recyclable at kerbside — we are transparent about this because we think honesty is more useful to you than a warm claim.
Our shipping boxes and void fill are paper-based.
We fulfil through Huboo, whose logistics operations include carbon-offsetting programmes. We report their numbers honestly rather than aggregating them into a headline claim.
What we’re still working on
A fully compostable outer pouch that passes moisture-barrier testing for a minimum 12-month shelf life. The PE inlay is the one element we haven’t yet solved. When we do, we’ll update this page and remove the caveat above. We won’t claim it’s solved until it is.
Organic, honest, improving.
We’d rather tell you what we don’t yet have right than give you a sustainability story that sounds better than it is. The cup is genuinely organic. The packaging is as clean as we know how to make it today.
